Starr Gern is pleased to announce that former Judge of the Superior Court, Donald S. Goldman, a lifelong resident of Essex County, and a current resident of Livingston, has become Of Counsel to the firm. Judge Goldman joins the firm’s alternative dispute resolution practice section as an arbitrator and mediator. He is also helping the firm’s attorneys manage complex cases and will be available to manage litigation on court appointment as a special master. Additionally, Judge Goldman will be providing the firm with legal counsel in all areas, commensurate with his extensive experience as one of Essex County’s preeminent trial judges for the past 17 years.
Judge Goldman was a Superior Court judge from 1992 to 2009, and during his career he authored dozens of published and unpublished opinions, touching upon a wide variety of important, cutting edge legal issues. The New Jersey Law Journal once characterized Judge Goldman as “Solomonic,” in his role as the trial judge who resolved a ten-year law suit between two major New Jersey law firms. This, and similar accolades, were earned by Judge Goldman while he presided over some of Essex County’s most complex, lengthy, and contentious trials.
Prior to serving on the bench, Judge Goldman, a 1970 graduate of Rutgers Law School, was in private practice, from 1970 through 1992 as a partner at West Orange’s Harkavy, Goldman, Goldman and Caprio, P.A. Similar to his career on the bench, Judge Goldman’s law practice was extremely diverse and he was an attorney known for handling difficult cases. Many high profile cases Judge Goldman handled as an attorney in private practice involved questions of constitutional rights and public health law that resulted in reported opinions from New Jersey’s courts as well as the federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court.
